healthy afterschool policiesEvaluation of healthy after school program policies

The City of Danville Parks and Recreation  recently adopted the Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Quality Standards from the National Afterschool Association to help improve physical activity and eating for participating children.  The proposed project will evaluate the effectiveness of this policy approach to improve physical activity and healthy eating during the afterschool hours as well as assess the degree to which the policies are implemented as intended. Currently a multi-year grant is under review at the National Institutes of Health.  In May of 2014, research staff and locally trained personnel conducted observations at 5 local afterschool sites to determine typical snack and physical activity opportunities for youth. This will provide preliminary support to our local partners and essential data to evaluate the effect of future policy changes as we await funding review.
